New School Zone Speed Cameras Are Issuing Thousands of Tickets

12,895 speeding tickets in just two weeks! Albany’s new automated school zone speed camera system is leaving local drivers stunned. From October 7th to October 21st, the cameras caught thousands of drivers exceeding the 20 mph limit by more than 10 mph—that means anyone going 31 mph or faster is getting fined.

But here’s the kicker: A significant portion of the revenue isn’t staying in Albany; it’s going to the camera vendor instead. That’s right—while the goal is to improve safety, many are questioning if revenue generation was also a driving force behind this program.

Caught off guard? You’re not alone. Despite a public notice from Mayor Kathy Sheehan, residents were unprepared for the volume of enforcement. The city had even held a “Speed Awareness Week” campaign before rolling out the cameras, part of New York State's push to curb speeding. But now, the question remains—will this lead to safer streets, or is it simply another costly adjustment for Albany drivers?

What do you think—are these cameras a necessary safety measure, or is this system going too far?
