The Long Way Home

Thieves Steal 2025 Corvette ZR1s From Bowling Green Factory in 180-MPH Chase

The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 — the fastest, most powerful production Corvette ever — hasn’t even hit showrooms, but it’s already making headlines for the wrong reasons. On August 8, 2025, two factory-fresh C8 ZR1s were stolen directly from the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

With 1064 horsepower, a twin-turbo V8, and a base price rumored between $150,000 and $170,000, the 2025 ZR1 is a supercar on par with European exotics. Unfortunately, its prestige has also made it a prime target for thieves.

Details of the Corvette ZR1 Factory Theft

General Motors spokesperson Rachel Bagshaw confirmed that the stolen Corvettes — one Arctic White ZR1 and one Sebring Orange ZR1 — still had their protective white factory wrap when they were taken.

Key Points:

  • Daring Heist: Both cars stolen directly from the Bowling Green plant’s secured lot.

  • High-Speed Pursuits: One chase ended in Bowling Green after spike strips; the other stretched into Indiana, topping 180 mph.

  • Ongoing Manhunt: One 20-year-old Detroit man arrested; second suspect still wanted.

How the Police Caught the Stolen Corvettes

Officers spotted the stolen ZR1s in a Western Kentucky University parking garage shortly after the theft. When approached, both suspects fled in different directions.

  • Arctic White Corvette ZR1: Stopped with spike strips on Louisville Road near the factory.

  • Sebring Orange Corvette ZR1: Pursued across multiple Kentucky counties, crossing into Indiana before being recovered in Martin County.

The chase was so high-profile that local scanner listener Roseanna Phelps live-tweeted updates, reporting that the cars were still wrapped in their shipping covers and that speeds reached over 100 mph before the orange ZR1 pushed to 180 mph.

Why the 2025 Corvette ZR1 Is a Magnet for Thieves

The C8 ZR1 is more than just another Corvette — it’s a 1064-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, track-ready machine. Highlights include:

Quick Specs Sidebar:

  • Engine: Twin-turbo 5.5L V8

  • Horsepower: 1064 HP

  • 0–60 MPH: Under 3 seconds

  • Top Speed: Estimated 215+ mph

  • Price: Estimated $150,000–$170,000

Its combination of speed, rarity, and value makes it highly sought after — not just by collectors, but also by organized car theft rings.

Security Concerns at the Corvette Plant

This isn’t the first Corvette theft at the Bowling Green Factory in 2025. Earlier in the year, another set of C8 Corvettes were stolen in a similar incident. With two thefts in less than 12 months, GM is expected to review plant security, possibly adding:

  • Expanded perimeter fencing

  • More 24-hour surveillance coverage

  • GPS immobilization before delivery

The Investigation Continues

The arrested suspect faces felony charges including:

  • First-degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle

  • First-degree wanton endangerment

  • Theft of an automobile valued at $10,000–$1 million

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for tips to locate the second suspect, believed to be the driver of the Sebring Orange ZR1.
