These days, no American auto company offers a station wagon but, back in 1956, Ford had a lineup of six wagons, all of which featured styling inspired by the Thunderbird and powered by the T-bird’s “Y-8” engine. The most distinctive of those models happens to be the subject of today’s AutoHunter Spotlight. You can find this 1956 Ford Country Squire four-door station wagon and start bidding on it on AutoHunter. It comes from the selling dealer in Montana with removable fender skirts, original owner’s manual, factory literature, and clear title.
The brochure for Ford’s 1956 wagons shows that the Country Squire came dressed in “Mahogany-grain-finished steel panels framed with wood-grained, glass-fibre moldings.” As part of a frame-on restoration in 2011, this car’s paint color was changed from the original Raven Black to Colonial White. In addition, the body was fitted with restored trim and 3M DI-NOC wood-like accents. Other features include chrome bumpers with guards, hooded headlights, hood ornament, flip-up rear window, and tailgate.
This wagon rolls into the country — or the city — on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with Ford wheel covers and 6.70 Firestone Deluxe Champion bias-ply whitewalls.
Interiors Unlimited in Connecticut reupholstered the eight-seater cabin, changing the color scheme from the original white vinyl and black cloth to the current combination of white vinyl and red cloth from LeBaron Bonney.
Features include power steering, column-mounted automatic shifter, clock, AM radio, and fold-flat third-row bench seat.
Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer plus fuel and temperature gauges. The odometer shows 92,000 miles, but the title indicates this vehicle is mileage-exempt.
The dealer states that the 202-horsepower 292ci V-8 and three-speed Fordomatic transmission are original to the car. The engine was factory-equipped with a four-barrel carburetor; it’s currently connected to a Holley four-barrel unit. A 3.54 rear end sends the V-8’s output to the whitewalls. If the Thunderbird’s engine starts flying away with the Country Squire, power front disc and rear drum brakes bring it back.
You can’t buy a brand-new American station wagon, but the good news is that you can bid on this 1956 Ford Country Squire until you win it. Just be sure to do that before the auction ends on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (PDT).
