Pick of the Day: 1972 Ford Econoline “Mystery Machine” Replica

If you’re interested in solving mysteries, you will need a few things: a jock, a popular girl, a nerd, a man who is always hungry, and a lovable dog. At least, that’s what we were taught in the classic Scooby-Doo cartoons we watched. Let’s not forget the iconic vehicle that took them from one thriller to another — the Mystery Machine. In case you are looking to start a paranormal investigation agency like Mystery Incorporated, our Pick of the Day might be a good purchase. This 1972 Ford Econoline “Mystery Machine” Replica is currently listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Shamong, New Jersey.

The origin of the Mystery Machine is never addressed in the classic “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” series (1969-76). However, in season one, episode five of “What’s New Scooby-Doo?” (a variation of the show, produced from 2002-05), we learn that Fred purchased the van from a man named Flash Flannigan. Flash was the lead pianist in a family band called The Mystery Kids — once the van came in Fred’s possession, he painted the word “Machine” over “Kids” and the legend was born.

The VIN might say Ford, but the exterior says Mystery Machine — literally and figuratively. From its show-correct blue, green, and orange paint to Shaggy and Scooby looking out the rear windows, this van may make you forget you’re not standing in a cartoon. The previous owner also installed dual chrome side mirrors, custom lettering over the grille, and Cragar mags wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised white letter tires.

The groovy custom air-conditioned interior continues the exterior’s color scheme seamlessly, with a heavy dose of shag carpeting mixed in. It includes custom embroidered front seats, an aftermarket stereo, and 1970s-inspired styling throughout. There is a large living room-style setup in the rear complete with its own dividing wall, and wraparound perimeter seat and table to sort out clues. In case you run into anything spooky, you can access the ghost detector above the front seats.

“Zoinks! Like, what’s that under the hood?” I’m glad you asked, Shaggy! This rolling tribute is powered by a 302-ci V-8 paired with an automatic transmission.

It looks like you can take this 1972 Ford Econoline Mystery Machine Replica home for … Jinkies, there’s no price on the listing! Have no fear — the way to solve this mystery is to click one of the images above and contact the seller.
