AutoHunter Spotlight: 1972 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS 396

Currently listed for sale on AutoHunter is this 1972 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS powered by a Turbo-Jet 396. This was the final big-block available in a Camaro, the last of a lineage that began mid-year 1967. The engine has been updated with fuel injection and is paired with a four-speed 700R4 automatic transmission with overdrive. Other features include front and rear spoilers, air conditioning, dual side racing mirrors, center console, and more. Painted Cranberry Red with a black vinyl interior, this pony car comes from the selling dealer with a clear title.

The Cranberry Red hue is complemented by black Z28 stripes. As this is an authentic big-block car (per the VIN and data plate), you’ll also find the tail panel painted flat black. Other exterior features include Rally Sport equipment, front and rear spoilers, dual side racing mirrors, twin exhaust pipes, and more. A set of reproduction 15-inch Chevrolet mag wheels with trim rings is wrapped in 245/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/As.

This Camaro was originally equipped with a black Custom bucket seat interior, which also included simulated woodgrain accents. Other features include center console with “horseshoe” shifter, air conditioning, power steering with four-spoke steering wheel, and aftermarket Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo.

Instrumentation includes 130-mph speedometer, 7,000-mph tachometer, and gauges for the coolant temperature, amperage, and fuel level. There also is a clock as part of the cluster. The odometer currently shows 28,438 miles though the title reads mileage-exempt.

This Camaro is one of 970 built with the LS3 Turbo-Jet 396 V-8, though it actually measured 402ci. It was rated at 240 net horses, but it likely has more today thanks to the Holley electronic fuel injection that’s been added. This rebuilt engine is connected to a 700R4 automatic transmission with overdrive.

The undercarriage features a 12-bolt rear housing 3.42 gears with Positraction. Other features include power front disc brakes and a dual exhaust system.

Sure, power was down compared to 1970, but the big-block Camaro was still capable of 14-second quarters in 1972. The fact that the car in our AutoHunter Spotlight is the last of the big-blocks weighs heavy in Chevy history, making this 1972 Chevrolet Camaro SS/RS an uncommon find. Considering its rarity, it would be a smart move for you to bid before Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 12:15 p.m. (PDT).
