We spotted a lot of exotic cars from McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Koenigsegg during Monterey Car Week, but we only saw one of these: a 1993 Bugatti EB110 GT. It comes from the second chapter in Bugatti’s history, when Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli owned the company and the cars were made in a brand-new factory in Italy. Artioli used the region’s wealth of automotive engineering expertise to create a distinctive wedge-shaped hypercar with a quad-turbo V-12, 6-speed manual gearbox, and all-wheel drive. The EB110 was a radical departure from the cars that preceded it in the first half of the 20th century and it’s not quite like the Bugattis of today, but its four turbos and AWD were a sign of things to come: After Volkswagen purchased Bugatti in the late 1990s, it started working on the Veyron, which uses both. Someone who saw this EB110 must’ve thought it was just as cool as we did because (s)he bought it for $1,847,500.
