Pick of the Day: 1982 Porsche 911SC

As of today, I have personally owned a total of 33 Porsche 911s of various types and sub-models. They were all amazing sports cars in their own right, and all had that special something only a 911 can deliver. The fact they are extremely well made, with rear engine layout and controls literally unchanged in their placement from 1964-89, make every classic air-cooled 911 have a feel unlike any other car. Of all the 911s I have owned, the ones I still think of as the best of the breed are the 1978-83 911SC models; the SC is the only 911 I have purchased three times. Everything came together with this model to make what is, in my opinion, the perfect 911. The Pick of the Day is one of these cars: a 1982 Porsche 911SC coupe listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a dealer in Flowery Branch, Georgia.

This SC coupe is finished in Zinc Metallic over a Cashmere and brown leather interior — what I feel is one of the best color schemes for a G-body 911. Both the paint and the interior on this car look correct and in excellent condition. This car had a repaint in its original factory color only 7,000 miles ago, and the interior was recently redone in correct materials.

The 911SC is such a strong, durable car that there are numerous examples out there with more than 250,000 miles on the clock yet still going strong. Total mileage on this SC is said to be 85,193, which is low for one of these models. The engine compartment looks to be in excellent condition and is completely stock and correct.

Happily, this SC is not running on BBS wheels. Instead, it is equipped with the correct factory-forged Fuchs alloy wheels with black centers it wore when delivered, though clad in newer Michelin Pilot Sport All Season tires. The seller states the car comes with records for the last five years that indicate regular oil services and the like.

There are faster air-cooled 911s than this SC and there are more flamboyant models (such as the 930 Turbo), but a stock 911SC in this color combination is, to me, the perfect embodiment of everything that makes a 911 great. The fact this specific SC does not have any added “whale tail” or other embellishments makes it even more alluring, as in this color combination it captures the essence of the 911 exterior design perfectly.

The asking price for this 1982 911SC is a very reasonable $69,500; it would be difficult to find any other comparable car for the money. If I were going to add Porsche 911SC No. 4 to my garage, it would be this one. Sure, I would have a pre-purchase inspection done but, if it passed, I would buy it, drive it home from Georgia and, in a few weeks, drive it to Monterey Car Week. Of course, there are flashier cars in Monterey, but a classic 911 will always be something extra special.
