Do All Classic Dodge Chargers Have Hidden Headlights?

After writing about a 1966 Dodge Hemi Charger in a video segment produced by Muscle Car Campy, there seems to be confusion about the availability of hidden headlights for the Charger. This story should settle the confusion.

“1966 had fixed, exposed headlights. 1967 had the rolling, hidden headlights,” commented one reader. “The picture shows a ‘67 charger as the headlights are hidden. Is this a mistake or is this hemi car just a late, late ‘66?” said another. I don’t know where the idea came from that the ’66 had fixed headlights and the ’67 had hidden headlights, but it’s simply not true.

From the outside, the 1966-67 Chargers differ in that the ’67s had turn signal lights mounted on the top of the front fenders. Otherwise, they’re externally identical, including the hidden headlights.

For 1969, all Chargers featured hidden headlights save the Charger 500, which was the NASCAR homologation special that pre-dated the Charger Daytona. It borrowed its grille from the Coronet to create a flush front end with exposed headlights.

With a redesign for 1971, hidden headlights were not a mandatory part of the Charger’s styling for the first time. The Charger SE’s headlights were concealed, while the feature was an option for the Charger Super Bee and Charger R/T.

1972 Dodge Charger SE

For 1972, the Charger SE continued to have hidden headlights standard, and they were available as an option for cars equipped with the Rallye package — at least when production began. Sometime in the middle of the model year, concealed headlights became an option for the regular Charger.
