It’s easy to think that the 1970 Buick GSX came standard with the 455 Stage 1. That’s what you often see in magazine features, after all, but the truth is that the GSX was a $1,195 package on top of the GS 455. That means you have GSXs with the standard 455/350 and some with the optional 360-horse Stage 1.

Interestingly, the Stage 1 was more popular: out of 678 made, 400 1970 GSXs were built with the Stage 1. It’s quite possible that one of the reasons for this was the discounted price for the Stage 1 option, as it normally cost $199.05 for the regular GS 455 but customers opting for the GSX package were only charged $113.75. What a bargain!

But the GSX was no bargain, easily crossing the $5,000 threshold. That was quite pricey for 1970, making the car untouchable to the typical Plymouth Road Runner buyer, but that was the price of high speed and style for five at the time.
