Aston Martin Valhalla Owners Can Get a Special Breitling Watch

It’s no mystery that there’s a lot of overlap between automotive enthusiasts and watch nuts: Cars and watches (such as the Bulova Shelby Racing Chronograph) are intricate machines that show the world your personal style. Back in February, Aston Martin and Swiss watchmaker Breitling reinforced that connection between the worlds of horsepower and horology by announcing a new product partnership. Their latest joint release is for Valhalla owners: the ability to customize one of two Breitling models to match their plug-in hybrid electric hypercar.

Aston Martin’s first production mid-engine PHEV combines a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with three electric motors that generate a total of 1,064 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque. Unloaded through the Valhalla’s eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, those figures propel the Valhalla to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. The price for this performance? Over $1 million. Aston Martin only plans to build 999 Valhallas; each owner gets the opportunity to customize a Breitling watch so that it coordinates with their car.

That might sound like a forgone conclusion, but this isn’t something that Breitling normally does. According to Aston Martin, “For the first time, Breitling is opening the design process of one of its most distinctive collections exclusively to Valhalla owners. Through a dedicated configurator, owners are invited to commission a bespoke Super Chronomat inspired by their individual Valhalla specification and personal style.”

Super Chronomat 38

Breitling offers two Super Chronomats as part of the program. As its name implies, the Super Chronomat 38 has a 38mm case rendered in stainless steel, which comes connected to Breitling’s signature Rouleaux bracelet with bullet-like links. Diamonds in the bezel surround a three-hand movement (hours, minutes, and seconds) powered by the Breitling 17 self-winding mechanical movement, which has a 38-hour power reserve. The carbon fiber dial features a date window at the six o’clock position. Valhalla buyers who opt for this model can choose the color of the hands and rehaut (the space between the edge of the dial and the sapphire crystal), and pick what’s engraved on the caseback.

The second option is the Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. Like the first model, it has a carbon fiber dial and a Rouleaux bracelet, but the titanium case measures 44 millimeters across. The biggest, most significant difference is the 39-jewel Breitling B19 mechanical movement. “Built to carry time across month lengths, moon phases, passing years, and the leap years ahead, it requires no manual adjustment until 2100.” Readjusting a perpetual-calendar watch can be a time-consuming process; fortunately, the B19 movement offers a 96-hour power reserve to help avoid that hassle.

To make this already special watch even more exclusive, Valhalla owners can pick the color of the rehaut, and the second and chronograph counter hands, then decide what’s engraved on the rotor that winds the mainspring.

Prices for the regular Super Chronomat 38 range from $11,000 to $16,500. As of right now, the only Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph on the Breitling site is a 140th anniversary model that retails for $81,900. Expect the ability to customize the Valhalla-specific models to come at a significant premium — and to see at least one of them on the wrist of somebody attending the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance or The Amelia Concours next year.
