Pick of the Day: 1947 Cadillac Custom Woody Wagon

What do you see when you look at the brochure for Cadillac’s 1947 series of vehicles? Graceful lines? Attractive two-tone paint combinations? Eye-catchingly styled rear fender stone shields? I see all of those, but one thing none of us can see is a station wagon. Our Pick of the Day rectifies that. You can find this 1947 Cadillac custom woody wagon listed on ClassicCars.com by a dealership in Sarasota, Florida.

There’s some odd math behind this car, which used to belong to car collector Tammy Allen. It turns out that creating this one-off required the base Cadillac plus major parts from three other vehicles. According to the selling dealer, this two-door Nomad-style wagon has a “chopped and lowered 1957 Chevrolet Station Wagon top fitted to a 1947 shortened Miller Ambulance frame” as well as the “rear fenders, taillights and gas door … from a 1948-49 Cadillac.” Once all that bodywork was done, it was covered in distinctive Palomino paint, then fitted with ash and mahogany wood panels. As if that didn’t make it stand out enough, the 16-inch wheels are finished in bright orange and surrounded by wide-whitewall tires.

Believe it or not, there’s more wood inside this Caddy than on the outside. It’s almost everywhere: the door panels, steering wheel, roof slats, and the entire cargo area including the curved pieces on the sides. There’s even wood on the back of the front seats!

The pair of low-back front buckets and the rear bench have been covered in burgundy leather, which adds a different color and texture to the log cabin. Despite the unusual body style, this is still a Cadillac, so it has convenience features that include power steering, power brakes, and Vintage Air HVAC.

The dealer didn’t include a photo of the engine, but it does state that this woody is powered by something from yet another Cadillac: a 429 V-8, which is paired with a four-speed automatic.

If you buy this 1947 Cadillac custom woody wagon and roll up to a car show, people will initially recognize it as a Cadillac, then see the wood and immediately start to wonder what exactly it is that they’re looking at. Be prepared to make new friends wherever you go! But first, you need to contact the dealer to discover the price of this unusual creation.
