Genesis Enters Full-Size SUV Market With GV90

Within the walls of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, California, Genesis unveiled its first full-size SUV, the GV90. The all-electric SUV built by the luxury division of Hyundai Motor Group combines comfort, style, and safety in one prestigious package.

“GV90 is not simply a new vehicle, but a new vision for luxury mobility that brings together inspiring design, AI-powered software and connectivity, and industry-leading safety,” says Euisun Chung, executive chair of Hyundai Motor Group.

Before entering the cabin, the GV90 oozes high-class curb appeal. The distinguished proprietary Wing Face Micro Lens Array headlamps flank the grille on either side in such a way that establishes its standing and belonging in the luxury vehicle segment. Genesis has utilized an advanced laser-engraving concept to seamlessly integrate the lighting elements with the rest of the exterior. Inspired by a dal hangari (Korean moon jar), the outside showcases minimalism in a way that exudes elegance.

Genesis uses a Son-nim or “treat each customer as an honored guest — at the highest level” hospitality philosophy to drive all its decisions. There is nowhere that this is more apparent than the GV90’s interior. The luxurious cabin is unveiled by the independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach door Neolun Arch Gate, what Genesis promotes as the “world’s first” of its kind. Reminiscent of suicide doors on classic Lincolns, the doors act as their own grand entrance reminiscent of when curtains open prior to a show.

Once inside, you’ll notice the ambient glow mood lighting that sets the mood for a comfortable sensory driving experience. The lighting casts a glow on the high-quality leather seats and woodgrain trim. As an already serene environment has been created, the occupants have an opportunity to take that a step further by engaging the Comfort Partition. which insulates the first two rows from the trunk area.

Imagine relaxing in this luxurious environment and then being able to active built-in blinds that create total privacy from the outside world. If you choose, you could set the climate control and then select one or all of the six sections of the Smart Vision Roof to become transparent thanks to a polymer dispersed liquid crystal.

While surrounded by opulent design and intuitive features, Genesis ensured the occupants would have the utmost confidence in safety. The GV90 is equipped with a total of 12 airbags, one of which being what Genesis touts as the “world’s first” Roof Airbag meant to provide protection in severe rollover accidents. There is also an in-cabin monitoring system, reinforced body structure, enhanced safety battery, and a cloud-based pre-diagnostic battery management system that identifies current and future anomalies that may prove unsafe.

With as much attention that went into how this vehicle looks inside and out, equal effort was afforded to the drivetrain and suspension. This all-electric SUV sits atop a 23.5 kilowatt-hour large-capacity battery that helps power high-performance front and rear motors to produce a combined 657 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft of torque. Each motor’s output is distributed based on feedback from driving conditions thanks to a Dual E-LSD setup, which works with a Multi-Chamber Air Suspension system equipped with Mono-tube Dual Valve Electronic Control System absorbers to provide a smooth ride.

The Genesis GV90 also features active rear wheel steering that allows the rear wheels to turn up to five degrees. Despite being a vehicle that’s roughly 208.1 inches long (for context, a 2027 Ford Expedition is 209.9 inches in length) and 79.9 inches wide, the GV90 has the same turning radius as a mid-size sedan.

Being that this SUV is an EV, it is important to note that Genesis estimates it to have a 310-mile range on a full charge. The manufacturer also mentions that the GV90 can go from a 10% charge to 80% in 22 minutes when utilizing a 350-kW DC fast-charger.

Pricing has not been announced but is expected soon. This being Genesis’s first entrance into the large SUV market, it will be interesting to see what more will be unveiled in regard to this luxurious all-electric vehicle.
