This 1957 Chevrolet Corvette Raced the Mille Miglia

It’s no secret that the Chevrolet Corvette was lackluster in its initial form. For 1955, Chevrolet made the all-new 265ci V-8 engine available, creating the Corvette that should have been from the beginning. Improvements for 1956 included a fine restyle and the availability of dual quads, but patient folks were rewarded in 1957 with the small-block being punched to 283ci and the availability of a four-speed manual and fuel injection — quite exotic for the time, and putting the Corvette on parity with the best that Europe had to offer.

Michael Moss, the owner of this Corvette, had the bright idea of putting his car through the paces in one of the most storied racing events and prove it in modern times. That’s the crux of this Corvette’s adventure in the five-day Mille Miglia. And, wouldn’t ya know it, it’s painted Venetian Red too!

A “big brake” car equipped with a cold-air box, larger sway bars, and tachometer (one of 43 built with this package), this car is the exact type of Corvette that would have competed in the Mille Miglia back in the day. How this romantic getaway to Italy came about can be seen in the below video.
