Of all the Camaros built since 1967, my all-time favorite has always been from the 1968 model year. Part of this is due to high-school memories of cruising in my best friend Jody’s ’68, listening to Ozzy on the stereo, and generally getting into the kind of teenage trouble that was standard during the 1980s. I also think that, from a styling standpoint, the 1968 Camaro really shined — and of all the options available for that year’s model, my favorite package was not the Z/28, but rather the RS/SS. Featured on AutoHunter now is one of these cars, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS coupe listed by a dealer in Lynnwood, Washington.
The seller states that this Camaro is powered by a rebuilt Turbo-Jet V-8 and correctly numbered as an SS 396ci engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It is finished in Matador Red over a black deluxe vinyl interior. While the engine in the car is a replacement, this Camaro comes with its original 396 block plus a clear title.
The exterior looks to be in excellent condition, finished in Matador Red, the car’s original color. This Camaro features RS exterior components that include functional hideaway headlights, which has to be one of the coolest options on a first-generation Camaro. They really transform the car’s look.
The factory Custom interior, which (according to the factory trim tag) was originally fitted with Parchment Custom bucket seats, now sports correct black vinyl upholstery, wood trim and a center console with a Hurst manual shifter. The dash features a 120-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm factory Tic-Toc-Tach, and factory center console-mounted auxiliary instruments for oil pressure, temp, battery, and fuel level. An aftermarket Alpine AM/FM cassette stereo has been installed, which is much like the one my best friend Jody had in his Camaro.
Under the hood is the rebuilt 10.25:1 Turbo-Jet 396ci V-8 with 325 horsepower backed by the aforementioned four-speed manual gearbox. The engine also features a four-barrel carburetor mounted on an aluminum intake manifold, and headers. Everything looks quite clean and tidy and, with the exception of the slight performance modifications, correct for a 1968 Camaro.
The underside of this Camaro also looks to be in excellent condition, with no evidence of rust anywhere. It also appears that the fuel tank has been replaced as it looks new. This car also has an aftermarket dual exhaust system, which seems to be in great shape.
If I were looking to relive my high-school days, this 1968 Camaro RS/SS would be just the ticket. It has every option I would want, including a great rebuilt big-block 396 and a manual transmission. The deluxe interior option makes the cockpit look much higher-spec than the base ’68 Camaro, and this one looks to be in excellent condition all around. If you are feeling as nostalgic as I am, then why not place a few bids on this great 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS coupe? I would act fast, though, as the auction ends Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 12:15 p.m. (PDT).
