Over the Labor Day weekend, my family visited my wife’s relatives in El Paso. While changing radio stations during the drive, I came up with a new spin on Car Connections. This week, instead of using random words as a prompt and finding ways to link them to automobiles, I picked three songs from the list of US Top 40 singles for the week ending September 18, 1976. Those songs are “Disco Duck” by Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots, “She’s Gone” by Hall & Oates, and “I Only Want to Be With You” by the Bay City Rollers. “Disco Duck”: Feathers. Down. Downshift. The C8 Chevrolet Corvette’s dual-clutch automatic will jump down to the lowest possible gear when you pull back on and hold the left shift paddle to maximize acceleration. Trust me, it’s fun.

“She’s Gone”: The 2007 Ben Affleck movie “Gone Baby Gone.” The “Eleanor” Mustang from the 2000 remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds,” which had a button on the shifter marked “Go-Baby-Go” that triggered the nitrous shot. When that baby got going, it was able to outrun a police helicopter. Watch the chase in the video below:

“I Only Want to Be With You”: The similarly named 1995 hit song “Only Wanna Be with You” by Hootie & the Blowfish. Fugu, a Japanese delicacy made with the puffer fish, which can be lethal if not prepared carefully. Fish. Catfish. The “Catfish Camaro,” aka the fourth-generation Camaro, a corporate cousin of the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
