First there was the Z28, the top performance Chevrolet Camaro of the Malaise Era. Then there was the 1985 IROC-Z, a performance package for the Z that added an upgraded suspension and other handling bits. And then there was the 1LE, a performance package for the IROC-Z created for SCCA Showroom Stock road racing.

Introduced in 1989 (though four cars were built for 1988), the 1LE included the G92 Performance Axle (with 3.27 or 3.45 gears, depending on transmission), larger brake rotors with two-piston aluminum calipers, aluminum driveshaft, special baffled fuel tank, special shock absorbers, and stiffer suspension bushings. Eagle-eyed enthusiasts could tell a Camaro equipped with the 1LE package from the exterior because the fog lamps were deleted. In fact, superfluous creature comforts were either deleted or not available.

For 1990, only 62 Camaro IROC-Zs were built with the 1LE package: 34 powered by the 230-horsepower 305 with a five-speed manual, and 28 powered by the 245-horse 350 with an automatic. The package would be offered through 2002, then revived for 2013-15 and 2017-24.

Among the 34 with the 305 V-8, one of them has only 25.7 miles on the odometer. It’s owned by Ryan Snyder, the same gentleman whose car collection has been featured in past Muscle Car Campy videos.
