Toyota Celebrates 60 Years of Corolla

The premiere of “Star Trek,” establishment of Miranda rights, and birth of Adam Sandler are just a few events that occurred the same year as when Toyota first introduced the Corolla at the 1966 Tokyo Motor Show. Named after the ring of petals around the central part of a flower, the Corolla has become a staple of Toyota’s lineup across the world. Toyota is now celebrating this occasion by creating a limited-production 60th Anniversary Special Edition trim package for 2027.

When it debuted in November 1966, the Corolla was only sold in Japan; it didn’t make an appearance in the United States until a year later. Sixty years later, the anniversary package will be available only for the SE Hybrid and limited to just 2,500 units for the American market. Each will be finished in a unique Supersonic Red paired with 18-inch machined, black-finished alloy wheels. The normal SE badging will be removed and replaced with special badging marking the anniversary.

Glance inside and you’ll find the celebration continues with trim-specific Black and Red Sport Fabric upholstery that sits atop what Toyota is calling “driver-focused sport seats.” Standard on the Special Edition will be a 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia System that includes navigation and other entertainment features like satellite radio. Special 60th Anniversary door sills and floor mats to complete the commemorative theme.

As the 60th Anniversary Special Edition is based on the SE Hybrid, the drivetrain will feature a 1.8-liter Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder paired with Hybrid Synergy Drive and electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Toyota estimates the vehicle will achieve 53 mpg in the city and 46 mpg on the highway. With a 13.2-gallon tank, you can expect to achieve a range of 607 miles or more.

Of course, this being a Corolla, it will come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 technology. This includes things like Proactive Driving Assist, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Also included is ToyotaCare, which covers normal maintenance up to one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The SE Hybrid currently has a base MSRP of $27,615. Pricing for the 60th Anniversary Special Edition package has yet to be released, but it is scheduled to arrive sometime early in 2027.
