Over the past few years, various manufacturers have altered their stances on going fully electric, but Jaguar is in the process of transitioning into a high-end EV brand. The good news is that there are plenty of classic Jaguars out there, such as the XJ-S (later, XJS), the model that replaced the E-Type in the mid-1970s. Although it wasn’t quite as curvy as its predecessor, the XJS’ sleek and slender profile, handsome lines, and rear flying buttresses make it distinctive in its own way. Today, we’re shining the AutoHunter Spotlight on this 1989 Jaguar XJ-S coupe that is up for sale right now on AutoHunter, so start bidding. According to the dealer, the Signal Red paint is original to the car. Exterior features include fog lights, bright trim, “leaper” hood ornament, pinstriping along the sides, heated power mirrors, heated rear window, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 15-inch lattice-style aluminum alloy wheels are also original; they come wrapped in a set of 235/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that were installed in 2025.
Inside the 2+2 cabin, Sand leather covers the heated front buckets, rear seats, center console, and armrests. Glossy burl walnut trim accents the door panels, dashboard, center stack, and center console. Comfort and convenience features include power windows and steering, radar detector, cruise control, air conditioning, Sony AM/FM radio with cassette player, factory telephone, and trunk-mounted amplifier and CD changer.
Behind the two-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel is a set of instruments that includes a 160-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and battery. The odometer shows 52,758 miles, a figure slightly above the most recent AutoCheck odometer reading of 52,561 miles logged in November 2025.
As an ’89 model, this XJ-S is from the “HE” (high-efficiency) V-12 era. The fuel-injected 5.3-liter SOHC V-12 was factory-rated at 262 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. A GM 400-80 three-speed automatic and a rear end with 2.88 gears send the engine’s output to the road. Power four-wheel disc brakes make this big cat behave itself.
