In Italian, the word “avanti” generally means “ahead” or “onward.” It’s a forward-looking expression that was fitting for a car that, despite manufacturer ownership changes, soldiered on for decades. Featured on AutoHunter is a 1984 Avanti II Coupe that is reportedly one of just 200 units built for the model year. Boasting Chevrolet V-8 power and a newer paint job, it is listed for sale by a dealer in Gladstone, Oregon.
The Avanti’s roots date back to the year 1962, when the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana rolled out a car that it referred to as “America’s most advanced automobile.” The model survived the collapse of its original manufacturer not long afterward, and it remained in production as the Avanti II for several more decades, with iterations produced through 2006!
The Avanti II’s distinctive exterior uses fiberglass construction and has no front grille (it’s tucked below the bumper). This Champagne Metallic example has been repainted in its original color and features black beltline moldings, dual side mirrors, pop-up sunroof, power antenna, and 15-inch wire wheels mounted to BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires.
The cockpit is trimmed in brown leather, and interior features include woodgrain trim, center console, air conditioning, power door locks, power windows, wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, power steering, tilt steering column, and AM/FM/cassette stereo.
Under the front-hinged hood is a carbureted Chevrolet 5.0-liter V-8 that was rated at 180 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. A console-shifted 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels.
The Experian AutoCheck report shows history that is free of brands, accidents, recalls, or insurance losses. Take note: The first record on the AutoCheck was logged in 2001, when the car was already 17 years old. From 2002-23, the car was consistently registered in Colorado. The selling dealer says the odometer has rolled over, and the title reads mileage-exempt.
Because of its low production volume of several hundred units for its model year, this Avanti II is an exclusive coupe with an unusual combination of iconic mid-century styling and 1980s updates. As an added bonus, its Chevrolet-sourced engine makes getting replacement parts significantly easier than dealing with obscure components. Win-win!
The auction for this 1984 Avanti II Coupe ends Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. (PDT).
