Pick of the Day: 1980 BMW 528i

Across eight generations and for over 50 years, the BMW 5 Series has been a key member of the manufacturer’s lineup. The first generation (E12) was sold from model years 1975-81 and set the tone for subsequent models. The Pick of the Day is a 1980 BMW 528i sedan listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Lisbon, Wisconsin.

“Clean, original California car,” the listing says. “Amazing documentation since new: 3-4 inches of documents. Most noteworthy [includes a] brand-new motor from BMW installed approximately 50,000 miles ago, along with new suspension, front end, and many other service/maintenance items.”

The 5 Series made a name for itself early on for having solid German build quality, a large greenhouse, and strong performance for its time. A magazine advertisement said, “A luxury sedan based on the belief that all of the rich are not idle.” It went on to say, “While the BMW 528i provides all the creature comforts one could rationally require in any expensive automobile, it also provides a driving experience so unusual, so exhilarating it will spoil you for any other car.”

While the European market saw the debut of the E12 5 Series in 1972, North American didn’t receive the car until three years later. And when the car did show up in the States, it had received some significant design and engineering changes such as different headlights, beefed-up bumpers, fender-mounted front turn signals, and more. Exterior features include fog lamps, body side moldings, driver-side mirror, and 14-inch turbine-style alloy wheels wrapped in Hankook tires. The seller says the car originated in California and is rust-free throughout.

The tan leather upholstery looks to be in excellent shape, and the dash is finished in contrasting black. Features include woodgrain trim, power steering, power windows, air conditioning, and aftermarket AM/FM/CD audio system.

Under the hood is an “M30” 2.8-liter inline-six (168 horsepower/170 lb-ft torque) with Bosch L-Jetronic electronic fuel injection. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels. Even though the odometer shows 184,942 miles, the engine was replaced about 50,000 miles ago. “Probably the best documented and maintained 1980 BMW 528i available anywhere,” the seller says.

This 1980 528i brings the tactile driving experience, German build quality, and classic BMW design that helped put the brand on the map in the American market. Even 50 years after its debut, the E12 is an executive car that still conveys status and presence.

“Rare opportunity to own such a collectible, original car,” the listing concludes.

The asking price is $19,900 or best offer.
