The Honda Passport TrailSport Continues Its Rugged Journey

Ever since it returned as a 2019 model, the Honda Passport has become progressively more focused on off-roading. The 2022 model year brought the first-ever TrailSport model, designed for “active buyers who thrive on adventure.” In November 2025, we tested the all-new 2026 Passport TrailSport, which came equipped with stiffer underpinnings, larger dimensions, new suspension, more powerful V-6, and more capable all-wheel drive. Earlier this year, Honda showcased the modified 2026 Passport TrailSport HRC Concept at Overland Expo West. Now comes news that the automaker has developed its first-ever Honda Trail Experience (HTX) app and that the 2028 Passport TrailSport will be updated to take on Toyota’s TRD models.

Going on an off-road adventure is great, but many people enjoy sharing their climbs and breathtaking views with others. Using input from more than 1,500 owners of the 2026 Passport TrailSport, Honda’s engineers developed HTX, which is free in the Apple App Store (with an Android version coming soon). The HTX app connects the driver’s iPhone to the Passport TrailSport via Apple CarPlay and logs 11 data points, including elevation, pitch, roll, brake pressure, throttle position, speed, tire angle, and latitude and longitude; users can customize HTX’s display to show six of those readouts.

The iPhone also serves as the video and audio source for HTX’s footage and photos. According to Honda, “Video capture is controlled from the vehicle touchscreen enabling TrailSport owners the flexibility and creativity to mount their device anywhere on the SUV. This includes on the inside or outside of the vehicle or even held by a spectator filming from anywhere within range.” Once the driver has their epic drive recorded, they can lay the data points mentioned above over it, then export the video to their friends, family, and fellow enthusiasts. If you happen to see a 2026 or later Passport TrailSport out wheeling while you’re in your Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium, just know that you might be on camera.

Speaking of TRD, Motor Trend reports (via Automotive News) that the Toyota is in Honda’s crosshairs with its updated 2028 Passport TrailSport. Currently, Toyota’s only SUVs with available TRD trim levels are the 4Runner and Sequoia. Scheduled to be released in the second half of 2027, the revised model “is expected to get a tougher design and an even more off-road-focused TrailSport trim.” What exactly will change? At this point, it looks as if the suspension will be revised for a higher ride height, which is useful in keeping a healthy distance from the hazards of Mother Nature. Given that the current generation of the Passport was introduced for the 2026 model year, don’t expect Honda to change it to body-on-frame construction and give it low-range four-wheel drive … yet. Who knows? Maybe the next iteration of the Passport will go full-hardcore SUV.
