Car Connections: Studebaker, Honda, and Ford

Memorial Day is almost here, a time in which we mourn and honor our country’s deceased service men and women. Perhaps you’re on your way out of town to spend the day with family or friends. Or maybe you’re getting ready for a get-together with fellow veterans. Whatever your plans are, I appreciate you stopping by for today’s Car Connections. If you’re not familiar with this series, here’s what happens: I make the Random Word Generator spit out three words, then I link them — somehow, some way — to automobiles. This week’s words are go, cluster, and measure. How would you associate these words with cars? Tell us in the Comments section below. (And click here for more Car Games!)

1963 Studebaker Avanti

Go: Go forward. Forward is one of the meanings of the Italian word avanti. Avanti was the name of the unusual yet stylish 1963-64 Studebaker model designed by a team headed by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy. He felt an egg had the most perfect design, but the Avanti is much more visually exciting (and lower in cholesterol).

Cluster: Grapes. Jam. Jelly. Preserves. Welch’s. Jack Welch. General Electric. General Grabber — the brand and series of all-terrain tires Honda puts on its off-road-focused Passport TrailSport model (read/watch our review of it by clicking here).

Measure: Cup. Flour. White powder. Powdered sugar. Donuts. Burnouts. Burning rubber. Line lock. Ford! The Electronic Line-Lock feature that was standard on the S550 Mustang GT locked the front brakes and allowed the driver to spin the rear wheels, exposing fresh, sticky rubber that could be used for better launches and faster times at the drag strip. Let’s just say that a friend of mine used it on a random concrete pad near a rural road. He didn’t measure how much tire smoke was in the cabin after that, but I think it’s safe to say that it was a lot.
