Australian Auto Enthusiast Visits America, Becomes Crazy ‘Bout a Mercury

Have you ever been to Australia? While some of their cars (like their animals) may come off as odd to American eyes, residents of Aus love a good V-8. Perhaps against conventional wisdom, this may make the good ‘ol USA (versus the United Kingdom) more endearing to automotive enthusiasts Down Under.

Mark Behr is an Australian enthusiast who has been creating YouTube videos for over eight years. As you can imagine, it’s a combination of home-grown automobiles combined with his taste for Yank Tanks. In fact, his father bought used a 1972 Ford Galaxie LTD (yes, that’s how it was named) that had been imported to Australia by Ford and converted to right-hand drive at a Ford facility (with other tweaks featuring local content), then used by the government. This influenced Mark’s taste in cars. In fact, he’s currently restoring a very rare 1969 Ford XL-GT convertible.

In the video below, Mark visits Dennis Pierachini, a gentleman in Northern California whom I can depend on to set me straight on Mercury content that I occasionally present to you. He’s been a Mercury superfan since he was a kid, and adulthood has brought ownership of several, old and new, including an unusual Bobcat wagon he owned from 1994-98.

In a sense, Dennis is the product of a time when brand loyalty and family influence was a thing, so it should be no surprise that Dennis’ garage is filled with a 1968 Cougar, 1965 Mustang with several nice options, and an original Marquis Brougham powered by a 429-4V.

The above video is part of Mark’s 2026 USA Road Trip series, which focuses on the cars and people that he encounters on his travels.
