AutoHunter Spotlight: 1970 Jeep Commando SUV

One of the vehicles that played a key role in the transition of Jeeps as bare-bones, military-derived utility vehicles into modern-day recreational vehicles was the Jeepster Commando. Featured on AutoHunter is a 1970 Jeep Commando SUV listed by a private seller in Apopka, Florida.

The Jeep (Jeepster) Commando was a rugged, short-wheelbase 4×4 built for recreation and utility by Kaiser Jeep from 1966-70 and later, American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1970-73. It came in truck, convertible, roadster, and two-door wagon body styles, and its successor was the SJ-generation Jeep Cherokee. One advertisement said, “Throw away your road map. We made it obsolete. This rugged combination goes where roads have never been.”

The exterior is finished in Matte Olive Drab; features include black bumpers, aftermarket headlights, antenna, dual side mirrors, black soft top, black hood stripe, tubular roll bar, 16-inch American Racing wheels, and General Grabber white-letter tires.

A brochure for the full Jeep range of vehicles in 1970 presented the Commando as both a “crowd-pleaser” and a “crowd-hater.” Pleaser because it drew a crowd everywhere it went. And hater because it offered a way to get away from the urban grind. The brochure said, “Get away from it all. Be a crowd hater any time you choose. Just take off! Haul your boat or trailer back into the boondocks. There’s no need to worry about getting stuck. You’ve got Jeep 4-wheel drive as standard equipment.”

The interior features front bucket seats, rear bench, black vinyl upholstery, center console, RetroSound Bluetooth radio, custom speaker setup, bedliner-like floor covering, and Jeep-branded all-weather floor mats.

Under the hood is a rebuilt F-head Hurricane 2.2-liter inline-four mated to a newer TREMEC five-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. The power braking system uses discs up front and drums out back.

For anyone wanting a classic, highly capable vintage 4×4, the Jeepster Commando is a strong player with deep American history. This one is ready to rock and roll, and comes with supporting documentation!

The auction for this 1970 Jeep Commando ends Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11:45. a.m. (PDT).
