General Motors’ G-body cars from the 1980s have become cultural icons. The Monte Carlo, Cutlass Supreme, and Regal (and its souped-up Grand National variant) combined body-on-frame design, high performance, lightweight design, and rear-wheel drive. The Pick of the Day, a low-mileage 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix, is listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in North Ridgeville, Ohio.
The fifth-generation Grand Prix was sold from model years 1978-87 as a rear-wheel-drive two-door coupe. Marketing materials said the car had “Personal luxury with Pontiac flair.” One advertisement said, “There is one luxury car that doesn’t compromise on performance. Grand Prix is still a Pontiac, and that means driving excitement. With quick-ratio power steering, fade-resistant power brakes, a front stabilizer bar that helps keep it square to the road in tight turns.”
This GP’s exterior, finished in two-tone Light Chestnut Metallic and Dark Chestnut Metallic, features quad headlights, hood ornament, chrome brightwork, body side moldings, sport mirrors, and 15-inch finned aluminum wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires.
The interior has a saddle cloth 55/45-split seat up front, power driver seat, fold-down armrest, woodgrain trim, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, Alpine CD sound system, custom under-dash speaker enclosure, floor mats, and Grand Prix Brougham dash plaque. One of the things that the Grand Prix was known for was its dial-heavy dashboard, featuring multiple circular readouts as well as round HVAC vents. Some of the ads from the era were framed as spinoffs of Dial soap ads, saying, “Aren’t you glad we use dials? Don’t you wish everybody did?”
Under the hood is a four-barrel-carbureted 5.0-liter (305ci) V-8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows 61,263 miles – a figure that the seller says reflects the true mileage of the vehicle. Be sure to check out the seller’s walk-around video.
